Vatic Note: My question is which bioweapons facility did it come from ?   Israel?  USA?  Its important we find out and prosecute to the full extent of the law.  As we have mentioned more than once on this blog,  this below, if used by man as a bioweapon against their own population, is a major felony criminal act of first degree assault and battery, first degree attempted murder, first degree murder for those who died from this, as well as an act of TREASON. And both, if resulting in deaths are death penalty or life imprisonment offenses.  PROSECUTION and justice are the systems way of dealing with such acts.  If we committed such crimes, there would be no hesitation about prosecuting.  We must, likewise, have the same damn attitude toward the 1%er's and push for such prosecutions.

Having said all that, it must be carefully noted the role of Andre Weber in the persecution of Kevin Arnett,  founder of the International Criminal Court that has been investigating and threatening to file criminal charges against the Queen of England and her consort, Prince Phillip for the brutal satanic murder of 10 native American Canadian Children.  Webber also knows more than most people, so he can't use the excuse of "ignorance".  

He unquestioningly sided with the Queen against Kevin.   Kevin is publically defending himself and doing a good job of it, but the side effect is now, "doubt" is seriously being thrown on Andre Webber and his role in that persecution publically of Kevin on the side of the Queen, whom we are discovering has a biological as well as a deep and abiding Satanic connection to the Khazars, who practice satanic rituals using children and drinking their blood.

Add to that, the fact that his guest whistle blower is a member of the financial community with extensive background and experience in the international banking field.  It is possible she is a whistleblower, but then, if she is not doing this for some reason for the bankers who want us in fear and trepidation in order to manipulate us into doing their bidding, then how come she isn't dead?

There are currently in the USA 71 individually dead bankers, taken out one at a time.  And done so either by the good guys or likewise, by the bad guys, if these bankers were having an attack of conscience, then its possible they became a threat.  I am always suspicious of "reasons why" a whistle blower does this, IF they were part of the cabal. 

What I got from this was that she is coming forward because she got sick, and had to deal with the problems associated with the illness.   So, its possible she is a legit whistleblower.   But caution is the by word.

APPENDIX II – MORGELLONS RESEARCH – BACKGROUND COMPILATION BY MARCIA PAVLIS  (From biological experts who have studied these medical conditions.)

October 26, 2005 – February 16, 2008 a man with the avatar tamtam posted about what he knew about something he called Silent Superbug in a an online forum “Human Biology” and a topic “Fiber Disease Thread”. He made at least 404 posts. I participated in in the same forum from August 30, 2006 until the topic was closed down by the administrators of the website. I believe that tamtam’s real name is Daniel Bell VanEeden, that he is a scientist from the Netherlands, and that he is the person in the white lab coat in the first silentsuperbug video.

He was trying to help us and he called this a crime against humanity. People of the Earth need to know about the release of this synthetic model organism CBL-001 Phoma Sp. (Pleospora), Silent Superbug, Fiber Disease, or what many wrongly call Morgellons. Please do what you can to help and share this information everywhere you can.

VATIC NOTE 2:  What I did in order to make this appendix more reader friendly is I took all of Tamtam's posts on this subject and made one big appendix with everything he wrote about and it was extensive.  There is no question he is a biologist as you will see when you read all of this.  You are more than welcome to go to the link of Andrew webbers site and read these with the dates etc on it, but I found it too confusing, so I made it as an article with paragraphs etc, without changing a single word to do with the subject at hand.  I hope its more user friendly, since it was for me.

So please copy this since it has all the science and proof you need about this being a man made disease and why it works the way it does.   It can be used in a court case as evidence since we know his name and can supeona him to testify. I read his article and it does not apply. Inconsistent. But, Dr. Martin will be asked to describe video footage that will be made available soon. Dr. Martin is one of the best because he has tried to explain and take the matter very serious. “tamtam” just gives a description of what can be observed in culture. Fibers can not be cultered – to my knowledge. The inner ear and its “significant” involvement wil also be tried to explain.

Dear TamTam and others, First, I want to respond to a few things on the forum and initially would like to voice my objection to the secrecy. I honestly believe that people have nothing to fear. By hiding behind false names one is forced to question the veracity and integrity. Like it or not, people will frequently base their opinion on the persons track record and scientific background. Medical science tends to exist in a framework of free interaction with secrecy being viewed as a cover of something less than pleasant. Now having voiced my peeve, I wanted to go on to a critical area, and that is treatment. Regardless of theory, everyone I know with this horrid disease is searching for cure or approaches which will improve the disabling and frustrating disease. In this context, we often learn a great deal by seeing what is effective treatment and from that gain a better idea, albeit incomplete, of what we are treating.
We have had remarkable and consistent success based on a protocol which is freely available. Essentially we treat the bacterial infection with Septra and Avelox (moxifloxacan). We have observed that the lesions heal rapidly in most cases. However, there clearly is a parasitic component present. Based on numerous clinical observations we initiated treatment with Biltricide (praziquantel) on a weekly basis with intermittent doses of Stromectol (ivermectin). For the insect infestations, we have been using Diatomaceous Earth as a pack. In addition we are very cautious in treatment of the eyes because we have seen cases of blindness. Thus we use Ophthalmic drops and in severe and selected cases we also use Diflucan.We have had remarkable success with every patient. Our team has also cultured the bacteria Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia. It is certainly possible that the organism has been genetically modified, however, it almost always responds to the antibiotic combination. We are identifying the worm that is involved but are yet to have a definitive diagnosis. But this has not stopped us from treating the condition with the best available knowledge we have. We welcome scientific discourse and dislike shadowy secrecy. Our desire is to work together to gain as much knowledge as possible to eradicate the disease. I am convinced there is absolutely nothing to fear except for idiosyncratic paranoid ideation. So basically guys, I’m out in the open. 6-4-6 The National Institute of Health (NIH) is considered the largest research funding organization in the world, with a 28 BILLION dollar annual budget. They support research which often leads to developments of new therapies, drugs, diagnostic equipment and much more. Industry funds research based on potential profits, whereas NIH funded research is determined by the agency’s internal agenda.
The following is extracted from a page one article in “Nature,” dated May 4, 2006. Direct quotations are shown in double quotes. This very highly respected periodical is read by scientists of various disciplines worldwide, with headquarters in London, UK. It is considered an impressive accomplishment for any scientist to have their work published in this extremely conservative, main stream science magazine. Many consider stories printed in Nature as though it came forth from the lips of God. Considering the due diligence the periodical does with submitted works, they have earned this reputation. This essay will leave out medical jargon as much as possible to get the point across.
NIMH – The Mental Health Division is one of 27 independent institutes
* The original facility (The Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center) is a 14-story building, 7 million bricks, more than 5,000 rooms, nine miles of corridor, 2.5 million square feet, 15 outpatient clinics and a Laboratory Medicine Department housed in a space the size of a football field. Before the Hatfield Center was opened, the Magnuson Center housed 24 inpatient care units.
* The new facility, the 870,000 square foot Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center, has 242 inpatient beds and 90 day-hospital stations. Groundbreaking was in November 1997. Dedication ceremonies were on Sept.22, 2004.
The National Institutes of Health are having problems with Elias Zerhouni at the helm. Zerhouni of course is a Bush-appointed favorite. He hails from Algeria and is a radiologist by training. His work as administrator at John’s Hopkins University is well known. Nature refers to the NIH as a “potentially poisoned chalice.” Such an endearing term, for an agency so revered for advancing medical research, and providing billions in new revenue for the medical industry. Zerhouni also is working with a project with the title “Roadmap.” (Remember the Pentagon’s new roadmap? Now NIH has one, too.) The purpose of Roadmap (which irritates people at NIH today) is to coordinate activities among its numerous branches. Some critics complain it isn’t working, claiming it “is diverting resources and attention away from basic scientific research.”
Part of Roadmap is to convert basic research into clinical practice, creating new instruments, medicines and procedures such used in doctor’s offices and hospitals. There is yet another aspect of the organization that concerns many – managing the organization’s “flat budget.” It has remained that way since 2003. The NIH budget was doubled between 1998 and 2003. A flat budget is very curious, considering the sharp increase in bird flu and other diseases we hear about constantly. Well-funded biologists are now attacking Roadmap because of it’s problems. Roadmap was published in 2003 and costs 400 million annually. It also intends to make basic molecular biology a broader initiative. Nature feels that Zerhouni’s efforts in this area “deserve support.”
Nature also states that the biggest problem Roadmap has isn’t with scientists, but with Zerhouni’s association with Bush. Previous health secretaries made earlier efforts to centralize the organization. One such infamous former health secretary, Tommy Thomson gave centralization his best shot, too. However, centralization is perceived by the scientific community as threatening independent research, and also the credible results of research. Scientists are concerned that Zerhouni has not defended their autonomy as well as they believe he could have. Zerhouni also must show Congress what is being done with the doubled budget of the agency. There is also great concern that “not enough young scientists are winning first-time grants during the most creative period of their careers.”
Zerhouni’s career leading NIH has not been smooth because of a serious conflict of interest. This resulted in “new rules governing scientists’ interaction with industry.” Congressional investigators found a wealth of commercial deals, of which the “NIH itself had no records.” Today “the Bethesda campus…is not a particularly happy place.” New post-911 security measures have not helped matters, damaging the college-like campus atmosphere. And “back-biting is seldom far beneath the surface.” Roadmap increases the director’s power in the organization. Staff and those who receive grants are not persuaded that Zerhouni is on their side.
So what does all this mean? NIH is yet another Bush-directed organization, micro-managed quietly in the background. Bush installed Zerhouni who will do exactly what he’s told. And a stifling security-paranoid atmosphere that can create a paranoid industrial intellectual property environment. For the entire world, this will almost certainly equate to a loss of creativity and innovation, with a subsequent loss of required medical advancements to fight increasing diseases. The aspartame fiasco showed how one past administration influenced the release of a toxic food additive. The so-called Zerhouni “Roadmap” has the bad smell of yet another Bush-control-freak plan, which even the Emperor penguins at the pole can smell. Centralization is a fascist and communist ideal, and will do great damage when taken too far. It’s impossible to schedule productivity in any research field – such pressures can easily produce shoddy research results. One can only imagine how many times a week Zerhouni must report in to his real boss Bush – who the world already knows was self-appointed. In the end, it will be the people of the world that will suffer as emerging diseases outpace research. Scientists in England already know that funding for research is very thin. So if the United States doesn’t fund research – who will? But what is population control all about? The Bay Area might be home to a small cluster of a horrifying and as-yet-incurable disease that leaves patients with open sores all over their bodies and strange, unidentifiable objects poking out of their skin. Or not. It’s possible that this mystery disease is all in their heads. The disease is called Morgellons, and no one knows what causes it or if it’s even real.
After more than a year of pressure from patients convinced they have Morgellons, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will begin investigating the ailment for the first time and determine, once and for all, whether it exists. The CDC started organizing a committee this week for that purpose.
“Not a day passes when I don’t talk to somebody who claims to have this,” said CDC spokesman Dan Rutz. “In the absence of any objective review, people have jumped to conclusions and found each other on the Internet and formed their own belief structure. We really need to debunk this if there isn’t anything to it or identify if there is indeed a new, unrecognized disease that needs attention.”
No one knows how long Morgellons has been around, but about four years ago a South Carolina mom who says her three children have the disease was researching their symptoms and found reference to a 1674 medical study that described a similar condition, called Morgellons.
The disease sounds like a nightmare. In fact, one Web site claims Morgellons was “invented” recently to help promote a summer horror movie. A search on the Internet reveals dozens of people who have posted magnified photos of their symptoms — usually twisted, thread-like protrusions from the skin and sometimes hazy images that look like small bugs.
It doesn’t help convince skeptical doctors that many sufferers complain of hard-to-believe symptoms. One San Francisco woman describes “tiny green shrimp” that come from her face, and she said she saw a fly pop out of her right eye. Even doctors and patients who believe Morgellons exists cringe at such reports.
“There really are physical symptoms that occur in people who are not crazy, although once they have it, it usually makes them pretty crazy,” said San Francisco Lyme disease specialist Dr. Raphael Stricker, who has seen several patients with Morgellons symptoms. Stricker and a handful of other doctors believe Morgellons is somehow related to Lyme disease because so many patients have already been diagnosed with Lyme disease.
Stricker and a colleague, nurse practitioner Ginger Savely, have written the only paper on the disease, published this year in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology. There have been no clinical studies. The non-profit Morgellons Research Foundation, founded by the South Carolina mom, is the only group keeping track of the disease worldwide. It uses a self-reporting system that encourages people who think they have Morgellons to register with the foundation Web site. So far, 4,131 households have registered, about 300 of them in the Bay Area.
San Francisco resident Pat Miller, 49, said he went to 11 doctors with his symptoms after he developed an itchy spot on the back of his head that turned into a sore and finally a “mound of skin … with deep black pits.” He also describes a “crawling sensation.”
Dermatologists said the black pits were blackheads. Almost every doctor he saw diagnosed him with delusional parasitosis — a psychiatric condition with symptoms eerily similar to Morgellons, in which sufferers believe they are infested with parasites.
Eventually, someone referred Miller to Savely, who is considered one of the few Morgellons experts. She has about 125 patients at her San Francisco practice.
“These people, I feel terrible for them. They’re suffering a ghastly disease, and no one will believe them, no one will help them, and in fact, everyone tells them they’re crazy,” Savely said. “If any one of these people came to me alone, I might have been skeptical of their stories. But when you have more than 100 people, and their stories are identical, that’s impressive.”
Few doctors have examined under a microscope samples of the multicolored filaments or black dots patients describe. Many who have seen the evidence brush it off as lint or dirt or something else from around the house.
Stricker said he has studied samples under a microscope, and they look like cellulose fibers, which typically would be found in plant material.
“When you see it, it’s very hard to explain away. These patients have something that’s really not delusional,” Stricker said.
Still, plenty of doctors disagree. Many Morgellons symptoms — the feeling of something crawling beneath the skin, the open sores, even patients’ conviction that they are absolutely infested with a parasite — can be attributed to delusional parasitosis, doctors say. The sores are self-inflicted, caused when people scratch at a spot they think is infected, they say.
“There are a huge number of people out there with (delusional parasitosis), and most of them are not getting adequate treatment because they have this fixed belief,” said Dr. Dan Eisen, a University of California-Davis dermatologist.

Buffer eyes first with eye cream (terramycine eye cream, by pfizer) Mint oil is very effective and the oil will stimulate blood flow. You can wash the oil away after 10 minutes. Topical application will not erradicate infection. Ask Your GP for oral Itraconazole or Bactrim. Say that it is rational to treat the infection as protothecosis.

Deadly Immunity Robert F. Kennedy Jr. investigates the government cover-up of a mercury/autism scandal In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference center in Norcross, Georgia. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session — only private invitations to fifty-two attendees. There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly “embargoed.” There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.
The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency’s massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines — thimerosal — appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children.

“I was actually stunned by what I saw,” Verstraeten told those assembled at Simpsonwood, citing the staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism. Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants — in one case, within hours of birth — the estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children.
Even for scientists and doctors accustomed to confronting issues of life and death, the findings were frightening. “You can play with this all you want,” Dr. Bill Weil, a consultant for the American Academy of Pediatrics, told the group. The results “are statistically significant.” Dr. Richard Johnston, an immunologist and pediatrician from the University of Colorado whose grandson had been born early on the morning of the meeting’s first day, was even more alarmed. “My gut feeling?” he said. “Forgive this personal comment — I do not want my grandson to get a thimerosal-containing vaccine until we know better what is going on.”
But instead of taking immediate steps to alert the public and rid the vaccine supply of thimerosal, the officials and executives at Simpsonwood spent most of the next two days discussing how to cover up the damaging data. According to transcripts obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, many at the meeting were concerned about how the damaging revelations about thimerosal would affect the vaccine industry’s bottom line. “We are in a bad position from the standpoint of defending any lawsuits,” said Dr. Robert Brent, a pediatrician at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware.

“This will be a resource to our very busy plaintiff attorneys in this country.” Dr. Bob Chen, head of vaccine safety for the CDC, expressed relief that “given the sensitivity of the information, we have been able to keep it out of the hands of, let’s say, less responsible hands.” Dr. John Clements, vaccines advisor at the World Health Organization, declared that “perhaps this study should not have been done at all.” He added that “the research results have to be handled,” warning that the study “will be taken by others and will be used in other ways beyond the control of this group.”

In fact, the government has proved to be far more adept at handling the damage than at protecting children’s health. The CDC paid the Institute of Medicine to conduct a new study to whitewash the risks of thimerosal, ordering researchers to “rule out” the chemical’s link to autism. It withheld Verstraeten’s findings, even though they had been slated for immediate publication, and told other scientists that his original data had been “lost” and could not be replicated.

And to thwart the Freedom of Information Act, it handed its giant database of vaccine records over to a private company, declaring it off-limits to researchers. By the time Verstraeten finally published his study in 2003, he had gone to work for GlaxoSmithKline and reworked his data to bury the link between thimerosal and autism.
Vaccine manufacturers had already begun to phase thimerosal out of injections given to American infants — but they continued to sell off their mercury-based supplies of vaccines until last year. The CDC and FDA gave them a hand, buying up the tainted vaccines for export to developing countries and allowing drug companies to continue using the preservative in some American vaccines — including several pediatric flu shots as well as tetanus boosters routinely given to eleven-year-olds.  (VN: Bast*rds)
The drug companies are also getting help from powerful lawmakers in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, has been working to immunize vaccine makers from liability in 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. On five separate occasions, Frist has tried to seal all of the government’s vaccine-related documents — including the Simpsonwood transcripts — and shield Eli Lilly, the developer of thimerosal, from subpoenas.

In 2002, the day after Frist quietly slipped a rider known as the “Eli Lilly Protection Act” into a homeland security bill, the company contributed $10,000 to his campaign and bought 5,000 copies of his book on bioterrorism. The measure was repealed by Congress in 2003 — but earlier this year, Frist slipped another provision into an anti-terrorism bill that would deny compensation to children suffering from vaccine-related brain disorders.

“The lawsuits are of such magnitude that they could put vaccine producers out of business and limit our capacity to deal with a biological attack by terrorists,” says Dean Rosen, health policy adviser to Frist.  (VN: Aaah, Dean is a khazar, figures)

Even many conservatives are shocked by the government’s effort to cover up the dangers of thimerosal. Rep. Dan Burton, a Republican from Indiana, oversaw a three-year investigation of thimerosal after his grandson was diagnosed with autism. “Thimerosal used as a preservative in vaccines is directly related to the autism epidemic,” his House Government Reform Committee concluded in its final report. “This epidemic in all probability may have been prevented or curtailed had the FDA not been asleep at the switch regarding a lack of safety data regarding injected thimerosal, a known neurotoxin.” The FDA and other public-health agencies failed to act, the committee added, out of “institutional malfeasance for self protection” and “misplaced protectionism of the pharmaceutical industry.”

The story of how government health agencies colluded with Big Pharma to hide the risks of thimerosal from the public is a chilling case study of institutional arrogance, power and greed. I was drawn into the controversy only reluctantly. As an attorney and environmentalist who has spent years working on issues of mercury toxicity, I frequently met mothers of autistic children who were absolutely convinced that their kids had been injured by vaccines. Privately, I was skeptical.
I doubted that autism could be blamed on a single source, and I certainly understood the government’s need to reassure parents that vaccinations are safe; the eradication of deadly childhood diseases depends on it. I tended to agree with skeptics like Rep. Henry Waxman, a Democrat from California, who criticized his colleagues on the House Government Reform Committee for leaping to conclusions about autism and vaccinations. “Why should we scare people about immunization,” Waxman pointed out at one hearing, “until we know the facts?”

It was only after reading the Simpsonwood transcripts, studying the leading scientific research and talking with many of the nation’s pre-eminent authorities on mercury that I became convinced that the link between thimerosal and the epidemic of childhood neurological disorders is real. Five of my own children are members of the Thimerosal Generation — those born between 1989 and 2003 — who received heavy doses of mercury from vaccines. “The elementary grades are overwhelmed with children who have symptoms of neurological or immune-system damage,” Patti White, a school nurse, told the House Government Reform Committee in 1999. “Vaccines are supposed to be making us healthier; however, in twenty-five years of nursing I have never seen so many damaged, sick kids. Something very, very wrong is happening to our children.”
More than 500,000 kids currently suffer from autism, and pediatricians diagnose more than 40,000 new cases every year. The disease was unknown until 1943, when it was identified and diagnosed among eleven children born in the months after thimerosal was first added to baby vaccines in 1931.
Some skeptics dispute that the rise in autism is caused by thimerosal-tainted vaccinations. They argue that the increase is a result of better diagnosis — a theory that seems questionable at best, given that most of the new cases of autism are clustered within a single generation of children. “If the epidemic is truly an artifact of poor diagnosis,” scoffs Dr. Boyd Haley, one of the world’s authorities on mercury toxicity, “then where are all the twenty-year-old autistics?” Other researchers point out that Americans are exposed to a greater cumulative “load” of mercury than ever before, from contaminated fish to dental fillings, and suggest that thimerosal in vaccines may be only part of a much larger problem. It’s a concern that certainly deserves far more attention than it has received — but it overlooks the fact that the mercury concentrations in vaccines dwarf other sources of exposure to our children.
What is most striking is the lengths to which many of the leading detectives have gone to ignore — and cover up — the evidence against thimerosal. From the very beginning, the scientific case against the mercury additive has been overwhelming. The preservative, which is used to stem fungi and bacterial growth in vaccines, contains ethylmercury, a potent neurotoxin. Truckloads of studies have shown that mercury tends to accumulate in the brains of primates and other animals after they are injected with vaccines — and that the developing brains of infants are particularly susceptible. In 1977, a Russian study found that adults exposed to much lower concentrations of ethylmercury than those given to American children still suffered brain damage years later. Russia banned thimerosal from children’s vaccines twenty years ago, and Denmark, Austria, Japan, Great Britain and all the Scandinavian countries have since followed suit.
“You couldn’t even construct a study that shows thimerosal is safe,” says Haley, who heads the chemistry department at the University of Kentucky. “It’s just too darn toxic. If you inject thimerosal into an animal, its brain will sicken. If you apply it to living tissue, the cells die. If you put it in a petri dish, the culture dies. Knowing these things, it would be shocking if one could inject it into an infant without causing damage.”
Internal documents reveal that Eli Lilly, which first developed thimerosal, knew from the start that its product could cause damage — and even death — in both animals and humans. In 1930, the company tested thimerosal by administering it to twenty-two patients with terminal meningitis, all of whom died within weeks of being injected — a fact Lilly didn’t bother to report in its study declaring thimerosal safe. In 1935, researchers at another vaccine manufacturer, Pittman-Moore, warned Lilly that its claims about thimerosal’s safety “did not check with ours.” Half the dogs Pittman injected with thimerosal-based vaccines became sick, leading researchers there to declare the preservative “unsatisfactory as a serum intended for use on dogs.”
In the decades that followed, the evidence against thimerosal continued to mount. During the Second World War, when the Department of Defense used the preservative in vaccines on soldiers, it required Lilly to label it “poison.” In 1967, a study in Applied Microbiology found that thimerosal killed mice when added to injected vaccines. Four years later, Lilly’s own studies discerned that thimerosal was “toxic to tissue cells” in concentrations as low as one part per million — 100 times weaker than the concentration in a typical vaccine. Even so, the company continued to promote thimerosal as “nontoxic” and also incorporated it into topical disinfectants. In 1977, ten babies at a Toronto hospital died when an antiseptic preserved with thimerosal was dabbed onto their umbilical cords.
In 1982, the FDA proposed a ban on over-the-counter products that contained thimerosal, and in 1991 the agency considered banning it from animal vaccines. But tragically, that same year, the CDC recommended that infants be injected with a series of mercury-laced vaccines. Newborns would be vaccinated for hepatitis B within twenty-four hours of birth, and two-month-old infants would be immunized for haemophilus influenzae B and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis.
The drug industry knew the additional vaccines posed a danger. The same year that the CDC approved the new vaccines, Dr. Maurice Hilleman, one of the fathers of Merck’s vaccine programs, warned the company that six-month-olds who were administered the shots would suffer dangerous exposure to mercury. He recommended that thimerosal be discontinued, “especially when used on infants and children,” noting that the industry knew of nontoxic alternatives. “The best way to go,” he added, “is to switch to dispensing the actual vaccines without adding preservatives.”
For Merck and other drug companies, however, the obstacle was money. Thimerosal enables the pharmaceutical industry to package vaccines in vials that contain multiple doses, which require additional protection because they are more easily contaminated by multiple needle entries. The larger vials cost half as much to produce as smaller, single-dose vials, making it cheaper for international agencies to distribute them to impoverished regions at risk of epidemics. Faced with this “cost consideration,” Merck ignored Hilleman’s warnings, and government officials continued to push more and more thimerosal-based vaccines for children. Before 1989, American preschoolers received eleven vaccinations — for polio, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis and measles-mumps-rubella. A decade later, thanks to federal recommendations, children were receiving a total of twenty-two immunizations by the time they reached first grade.
As the number of vaccines increased, the rate of autism among children exploded. During the 1990s, 40 million children were injected with thimerosal-based vaccines, receiving unprecedented levels of mercury during a period critical for brain development. Despite the well-documented dangers of thimerosal, it appears that no one bothered to add up the cumulative dose of mercury that children would receive from the mandated vaccines. “What took the FDA so long to do the calculations?” Peter Patriarca, director of viral products for the agency, asked in an e-mail to the CDC in 1999. “Why didn’t CDC and the advisory bodies do these calculations when they rapidly expanded the childhood immunization schedule?”
But by that time, the damage was done. At two months, when the infant brain is still at a critical stage of development, infants routinely received three inoculations that contained a total of 62.5 micrograms of ethylmercury — a level 99 times greater than the EPA’s limit for daily exposure to methylmercury, a related neurotoxin. Although the vaccine industry insists that ethylmercury poses little danger because it breaks down rapidly and is removed by the body, several studies — including one published in April by the National Institutes of Health — suggest that ethylmercury is actually more toxic to developing brains and stays in the brain longer than methylmercury.
Officials responsible for childhood immunizations insist that the additional vaccines were necessary to protect infants from disease and that thimerosal is still essential in developing nations, which, they often claim, cannot afford the single-dose vials that don’t require a preservative. Dr. Paul Offit, one of CDC’s top vaccine advisers, told me, “I think if we really have an influenza pandemic — and certainly we will in the next twenty years, because we always do — there’s no way on God’s earth that we immunize 280 million people with single-dose vials. There has to be multidose vials.”
But while public-health officials may have been well-intentioned, many of those on the CDC advisory committee who backed the additional vaccines had close ties to the industry. Dr. Sam Katz, the committee’s chair, was a paid consultant for most of the major vaccine makers and was part of a team that developed the measles vaccine and brought it to licensure in 1963. Dr. Neal Halsey, another committee member, worked as a researcher for the vaccine companies and received honoraria from Abbott Labs for his research on the hepatitis B vaccine.
Indeed, in the tight circle of scientists who work on vaccines, such conflicts of interest are common. Rep. Burton says that the CDC “routinely allows scientists with blatant conflicts of interest to serve on intellectual advisory committees that make recommendations on new vaccines,” even though they have “interests in the products and companies for which they are supposed to be providing unbiased oversight.” The House Government Reform Committee discovered that four of the eight CDC advisers who approved guidelines for a rotavirus vaccine “had financial ties to the pharmaceutical companies that were developing different versions of the vaccine.”
Offit, who shares a patent on one of the vaccines, acknowledged to me that he “would make money” if his vote eventually leads to a marketable product. But he dismissed my suggestion that a scientist’s direct financial stake in CDC approval might bias his judgment. “It provides no conflict for me,” he insists. “I have simply been informed by the process, not corrupted by it. When I sat around that table, my sole intent was trying to make recommendations that best benefited the children in this country. It’s offensive to say that physicians and public-health people are in the pocket of industry and thus are making decisions that they know are unsafe for children. It’s just not the way it works.”
Other vaccine scientists and regulators gave me similar assurances. Like Offit, they view themselves as enlightened guardians of children’s health, proud of their “partnerships” with pharmaceutical companies, immune to the seductions of personal profit, besieged by irrational activists whose anti-vaccine campaigns are endangering children’s health. They are often resentful of questioning. “Science,” says Offit, “is best left to scientists.”
Still, some government officials were alarmed by the apparent conflicts of interest. In his e-mail to CDC administrators in 1999, Paul Patriarca of the FDA blasted federal regulators for failing to adequately scrutinize the danger posed by the added baby vaccines. “I’m not sure there will be an easy way out of the potential perception that the FDA, CDC and immunization-policy bodies may have been asleep at the switch re: thimerosal until now,” Patriarca wrote. The close ties between regulatory officials and the pharmaceutical industry, he added, “will also raise questions about various advisory bodies regarding aggressive recommendations for use” of thimerosal in child vaccines.
If federal regulators and government scientists failed to grasp the potential risks of thimerosal over the years, no one could claim ignorance after the secret meeting at Simpsonwood. But rather than conduct more studies to test the link to autism and other forms of brain damage, the CDC placed politics over science. The agency turned its database on childhood vaccines — which had been developed largely at taxpayer expense — over to a private agency, America’s Health Insurance Plans, ensuring that it could not be used for additional research. It also instructed the Institute of Medicine, an advisory organization that is part of the National Academy of Sciences, to produce a study debunking the link between thimerosal and brain disorders. The CDC “wants us to declare, well, that these things are pretty safe,” Dr. Marie McCormick, who chaired the IOM’s Immunization Safety Review Committee, told her fellow researchers when they first met in January 2001. “We are not ever going to come down that [autism] is a true side effect” of thimerosal exposure. According to transcripts of the meeting, the committee’s chief staffer, Kathleen Stratton, predicted that the IOM would conclude that the evidence was “inadequate to accept or reject a causal relation” between thimerosal and autism. That, she added, was the result “Walt wants” — a reference to Dr. Walter Orenstein, director of the National Immunization Program for the CDC.
For those who had devoted their lives to promoting vaccination, the revelations about thimerosal threatened to undermine everything they had worked for. “We’ve got a dragon by the tail here,” said Dr. Michael Kaback, another committee member. “The more negative that [our] presentation is, the less likely people are to use vaccination, immunization — and we know what the results of that will be. We are kind of caught in a trap. How we work our way out of the trap, I think is the charge.”
Even in public, federal officials made it clear that their primary goal in studying thimerosal was to dispel doubts about vaccines. “Four current studies are taking place to rule out the proposed link between autism and thimerosal,” Dr. Gordon Douglas, then-director of strategic planning for vaccine research at the National Institutes of Health, assured a Princeton University gathering in May 2001. “In order to undo the harmful effects of research claiming to link the [measles] vaccine to an elevated risk of autism, we need to conduct and publicize additional studies to assure parents of safety.” Douglas formerly served as president of vaccinations for Merck, where he ignored warnings about thimerosal’s risks.
In May of last year, the Institute of Medicine issued its final report. Its conclusion: There is no proven link between autism and thimerosal in vaccines. Rather than reviewing the large body of literature describing the toxicity of thimerosal, the report relied on four disastrously flawed epidemiological studies examining European countries, where children received much smaller doses of thimerosal than American kids. It also cited a new version of the Verstraeten study, published in the journal Pediatrics, that had been reworked to reduce the link between thimerosal and autism. The new study included children too young to have been diagnosed with autism and overlooked others who showed signs of the disease. The IOM declared the case closed and — in a startling position for a scientific body — recommended that no further research be conducted.
The report may have satisfied the CDC, but it convinced no one. Rep. David Weldon, a Republican physician from Florida who serves on the House Government Reform Committee, attacked the Institute of Medicine, saying it relied on a handful of studies that were “fatally flawed” by “poor design” and failed to represent “all the available scientific and medical research.” CDC officials are not interested in an honest search for the truth, Weldon told me, because “an association between vaccines and autism would force them to admit that their policies irreparably damaged thousands of children. Who would want to make that conclusion about themselves?”
Under pressure from Congress and parents, the Institute of Medicine convened another panel to address continuing concerns about the Vaccine Safety Datalink Data Sharing program. In February, the new panel, composed of different scientists, criticized the way the VSD had been used in the Verstraeten study, and urged the CDC to make its vaccine database available to the public.
So far, though, only two scientists have managed to gain access. Dr. Mark Geier, president of the Genetics Center of America, and his son, David, spent a year battling to obtain the medical records from the CDC. Since August 2002, when members of Congress pressured the agency to turn over the data, the Geiers have completed six studies that demonstrate a powerful correlation between thimerosal and neurological damage in children. One study, which compares the cumulative dose of mercury received by children born between 1981 and 1985 with those born between 1990 and 1996, found a “very significant relationship” between autism and vaccines. Another study of educational performance found that kids who received higher doses of thimerosal in vaccines were nearly three times as likely to be diagnosed with autism and more than three times as likely to suffer from speech disorders and mental retardation. Another soon-to-be published study shows that autism rates are in decline following the recent elimination of thimerosal from most vaccines.
As the federal government worked to prevent scientists from studying vaccines, others have stepped in to study the link to autism. In April, reporter Dan Olmsted of UPI undertook one of the more interesting studies himself. Searching for children who had not been exposed to mercury in vaccines — the kind of population that scientists typically use as a “control” in experiments — Olmsted scoured the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, who refuse to immunize their infants. Given the national rate of autism, Olmsted calculated that there should be 130 autistics among the Amish. He found only four. One had been exposed to high levels of mercury from a power plant. The other three — including one child adopted from outside the Amish community — had received their vaccines.
At the state level, many officials have also conducted in-depth reviews of thimerosal. While the Institute of Medicine was busy whitewashing the risks, the Iowa legislature was carefully combing through all of the available scientific and biological data. “After three years of review, I became convinced there was sufficient credible research to show a link between mercury and the increased incidences in autism,” says state Sen. Ken Veenstra, a Republican who oversaw the investigation. “The fact that Iowa’s 700 percent increase in autism began in the 1990s, right after more and more vaccines were added to the children’s vaccine schedules, is solid evidence alone.” Last year, Iowa became the first state to ban mercury in vaccines, followed by California. Similar bans are now under consideration in thirty-two other states.
But instead of following suit, the FDA continues to allow manufacturers to include thimerosal in scores of over-the-counter medications as well as steroids and injected collagen. Even more alarming, the government continues to ship vaccines preserved with thimerosal to developing countries — some of which are now experiencing a sudden explosion in autism rates. In China, where the disease was virtually unknown prior to the introduction of thimerosal by U.S. drug manufacturers in 1999, news reports indicate that there are now more than 1.8 million autistics. Although reliable numbers are hard to come by, autistic disorders also appear to be soaring in India, Argentina, Nicaragua and other developing countries that are now using thimerosal-laced vaccines. The World Health Organization continues to insist thimerosal is safe, but it promises to keep the possibility that it is linked to neurological disorders “under review.”
I devoted time to study this issue because I believe that this is a moral crisis that must be addressed. If, as the evidence suggests, our public-health authorities knowingly allowed the pharmaceutical industry to poison an entire generation of American children, their actions arguably constitute one of the biggest scandals in the annals of American medicine. “The CDC is guilty of incompetence and gross negligence,” says Mark Blaxill, vice president of Safe Minds, a nonprofit organization concerned about the role of mercury in medicines. “The damage caused by vaccine exposure is massive. It’s bigger than asbestos, bigger than tobacco, bigger than anything you’ve ever seen.”
It’s hard to calculate the damage to our country — and to the international efforts to eradicate epidemic diseases — if Third World nations come to believe that America’s most heralded foreign-aid initiative is poisoning their children. It’s not difficult to predict how this scenario will be interpreted by America’s enemies abroad. The scientists and researchers — many of them sincere, even idealistic — who are participating in efforts to hide the science on thimerosal claim that they are trying to advance the lofty goal of protecting children in developing nations from disease pandemics. They are badly misguided. Their failure to come clean on thimerosal will come back horribly to haunt our country and the world’s poorest populations.
NOTE: This story has been updated to correct several inaccuracies in the original, published version. As originally reported, American preschoolers received only three vaccinations before 1989, but the article failed to note that they were innoculated a total of eleven times with those vaccines, including boosters. The article also misstated the level of ethylmercury received by infants injected with all their shots by the age of six months. It was 187 micrograms – an amount forty percent, not 187 times, greater than the EPA’s limit for daily exposure to methylmercury. Finally, because of an editing error, the article misstated the contents of the rotavirus vaccine approved by the CDC. It did not contain thimerosal. Salon and Rolling Stone regret the errors.
An earlier version of this story stated that the Institute of Medicine convened a second panel to review the work of the Immunization Safety Review Committee that had found no evidence of a link between thimerosal and autism. In fact, the IOM convened the second panel to address continuing concerns about the Vaccine Safety Datalink Data Sharing program, including those raised by critics of the IOM’s earlier work. But the panel was not charged with reviewing the committee’s findings. CLARIFICATION: After publication of this story, Salon and Rolling Stone corrected an error that misstated the level of ethylmercury received by infants injected with all their shots by the age of six months. It was 187 micrograms ? an amount forty percent, not 187 times, greater than the EPA’s limit for daily exposure to methylmercury. At the time of the correction, we were aware that the comparison itself was flawed, but as journalists we considered it more appropriate to state the correct figure rather than replace it with another number entirely.

Since that earlier correction, however, it has become clear from responses to the article that the forty-percent number, while accurate, is misleading. It measures the total mercury load an infant received from vaccines during the first six months, calculates the daily average received based on average body weight, and then compares that number to the EPA daily limit. But infants did not receive the vaccines as a ?daily average? ? they received massive doses on a single day, through multiple shots. As the story states, these single-day doses exceeded the EPA limit by as much as 99 times. Based on the misunderstanding, and to avoid further confusion, we have amended the story to eliminate the forty-percent figure.

Correction: The story misattributed a quote to Andy Olson, former legislative counsel to Senator Bill Frist. The comment was made by Dean Rosen, health policy adviser to the senator. Rolling Stone and Salon.com regret the error.

Prototheca like (dark discoloration of infected cell layers) will only show up during effective treatment. Again: this is a systemic acting infectious micro organism. Topical treatment only will not cure.

Synchronous treatment against trypanosomes could be a rational option, but I do not advise this. About treatments in relation to african trypanosomiasis: Clinical trials The complicated and expensive trypanosomiasis screening test primarily involves taking a blood sample and a ganglion aspiration (if cervical lymph nodes are discovered during the check-up).

These samples are then analysed in a mobile or fixed laboratory. The treatment for people testing positive depends on how far the disease has advanced. Two phases are singled out. During the first one, the trypanosomiasis symptoms are quite general: intermittent fever, swollen cervical lymph nodes and skin irritation, for example. A simple treatment is given in this case.

In the second stage of the disease, the trypanosomes will have reached the central nervous system (the brain, the spinal cord) and the symptoms become neurological: headaches at increasingly frequent intervals, sleeping problems (sufferers hardly sleep at night but sleep a lot during the daytime, hence the name “sleeping sickness”), and confusion. The patient’s loss of appetite and fever eventually leads to a “cachexia”.

Definition The Chemical Hazards Program defines “Unidentified Dermatosis Syndrome” as reports of tiny bugs that look like black specks, or thread-like parasites in the skin; or of “something” biting, stinging, or crawling in the skin, and an accompanying set of symptoms including itching, visible sores, and fatigue.

Identifying Protein Interactions
While it is convenient to think of proteins as discrete and independent molecules, this is actually an oversimplified view. Many proteins require other proteins or cofactors for activity; and proteins involved in signal transduction, protein trafficking, cell cycle, and gene regulation must interact with other proteins in those processes.

Many of these interactions require particular domains called interaction domains. Proteins involved in the interactions contain combinations of interaction domains (for interaction with other proteins) and catalytic domains (for function of the protein). The interaction domain can bind the partner protein, even in the absence of the rest of the protein.

Interaction domains are often quite versatile, capable of binding a variety of related ligands. In addition, one protein may contain several different interaction domains. The modular nature of these domains allows the protein to interact with multiple target proteins in the cell; thus it provides a mechanism for integration and control of information from protein to protein in a cell. Such protein-protein interactions form the basis for our current understanding of cell signaling pathways and protein networks that regulate all the activities in a cell.

Because protein-protein interactions regulate the activities of cells, identifying them is critical to understanding cellular processes. Mass spectrometry techniques have been developed for large-scale screening to identify interacting proteins. For example, hundreds of known proteins in yeast were engineered to contain a biochemical tag that would allow the tagged protein to be separated from other proteins in a cell extract.

This was done gently so that other proteins bound to the tagged protein would still be attached. The tagged protein, along with any associated proteins, was then analyzed by mass spectrometry. The results revealed that about eighty-five percent of these proteins were associated with other proteins.

Although most interacted with many other proteins, in some cases two different protein complexes had at least one protein in common. Among the most intriguing questions to come out of this research were what controls which proteins interact and – for those that interact in multiple complexes – how do these proteins know which complex to join?

Coda: A particular example is the possible similarity between scientific theory building and delusional thought. Early on, I was already at security level three, but there were at least four levels of security. At level one, the explanation, called “an open legend,” was that there was no biological weapons program at all. The work at the institute was completely academic and open.

At level two, there was “a closed legend” explaining that there was a strictly defensive weapons program. At the third level, a particular person was provided with a description of some programs there were and what were the true purposes of these programs. But even this wasn’t the complete truth. The real truth was at level four, which I viewed only briefly much later on. I read these types of documents on only one occasion. Level number four described the purpose of specific programs and their interconnections. I read some of them, but I didn’t know the whole picture. And I believe that below level four, there was yet another level with a full description of all the bioweapons programs. Remember: topical administration can only be regarded as palliative. It will never cure you of this infection.

That no efficient therapeutic approach is possible is not established. But based on its composition (a cyanobacterium fused with at least one mayor parasitic protozoa) makes it unlikely that an easy solution will be readily available. Doubtfully sure I predict that therapy may have to include toxic compounds like amphotericin B as indicated against protothecosis and/ or highly toxic therapeutic agents as used against trypanosomes.

The fact that standard laboratory tests do not yield a clue and that biopsies tend to stay free of this infectious agent is not an established standard to measure with. Per definition it would not be the first infectious agent that is very difficult to culture or to observe in tissue samples. That doctors are not willing to take care for the ones that are obviously affected may soon be matter of history and I think a correction involving more than one discipline is unavoidable.

This was excited by reports early in March from the Gzaiel sector, just to the north of Basra, of groups of Iranian corpses having been seen that were said to bear no external trace of injury–looking as though they had fallen asleep in their foxholes. Indigenous or external sources of supply? With the exceptions, maybe, of the last two of these different categories of putative Iraqi agent, sources of supply might as well be indigenous as external to Iraq, given the technology implied.

Involvement of the last three categories would, in some circles, implicate the USSR as supplier, for the reason that the USSR is said, on evidence that has yet to be solidly substantiated but which has nonetheless attracted some firm believers, to have weaponized all three of them in recent years. For its part, the USSR has expressly denied supplying Iraq with toxic weapons. Reports of Soviet supply attributed to US and other intelligence sources have nonetheless recurred. The earliest predate reports of Iraqi use of chemical weapons in the Gulf War. Official Iranian commentaries, too, have pointed to the USSR as a supplier of the Iraqi weapons.

These sources have also accused Brazil, France and, most conspicuously, Britain of supplying the weapons. No basis for any of these Iranian accusations has been disclosed. France, alongside Czechoslovakia and both Germanies, is reportedly also rumoured, among “foreign military and diplomatic sources” in Baghdad, to have supplied Iraq with chemical precursors needed for an indigenous production effort. Unofficial published sources have cited Egypt as a possible supplier of actual chemical weapons. Microcystins The microcystins are hepatotoxic products of freshwater blooms of cyanobacteria of Microcystis spp., M. aeruginosa in particular. Microcystin-LR, also known as the fast death factor, is the most common of the microcystins and presumably the toxin of choice to be weaponized. 

Although the aerosolized form of microcystin is the most likely threat, ingestion–even from natural sources–must be considered a significant hazard Microcystins have been implicated in the death of human dialysis patients (69).

The toxic effect of microcystin administered intraperitoneally is rapid; it affects bile flow in < 10 min. Death in laboratory animals is due to hypovolemic shock caused by interstitial hemorrhage following liver necrosis (60,66). Mice administered the aerosol LD50, 67 µg/kg, died within hours (66). An ID50 of 1-10 mg (per person) for microcystin by an unspecified route of exposure has been estimated (32).

A conservative drinking water NOAEL for microcystin would be 10 µg/L for soldiers consuming 15 L/day; however, the World Health Organization has adopted a drinking water standard of 1.0 µg/L total microcystins for lifetime exposure. The microcystins are all water soluble and temperature stable (61,66).

Microcystin is essentially unaffected by 30 min exposure to 100 mg/L FAC (67). Iodine has no effect at 16 mg/L. Microcystin removal from water by RO is > 90%, but coagulation/flocculation was not effective (67), in agreement with earlier findings that alum flocculation, filtration, and chlorination are ineffective in the removal of cyanobacterial toxins.

No data exists on the activity of biocides (antiseptics and disinfectants) on Rhinosporidium seeberi that causes rhinosporidiosis in humans and animals. On account of the inability to culture R. seeberi, in vitro, dyes were used to assess the morphological integrity and viability of biocide-treated endospores that are considered to be the infective stage of this pathogen.

Evan’s Blue (EvB) identifies the morphological integrity of the endospores while MTT (3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2yl]-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) identifies metabolic activity through its reduction by cellular dehydrogenases to microscopically visible deposits of insoluble formazan.

MTT-negativity has earlier been shown to correlate with absence of growth of yeast and mycelial fungi in culture and could thus indicate the loss of viability of MTT-negative rhinosporidial endospores. Hydrogen peroxide, glutaraldehyde, chloroxylenol, chlorhexidine, cetrimide, thimerosal, 70% ethanol, iodine in 70% ethanol, 10% formalin, povidone-iodine, sodium azide and silver nitrate were tested on freshly-harvested endospores and all biocides caused metabolic inactivation with or without altered structural integrity as shown by absence of MTT-staining after 3, 24 or 36 hour after exposure, while EvB stained only the endospores treated with sodium azide, ethanol, thimerosal, chloroxylenol, glutaraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide.

With clinically useful biocides – chlorhexidine, cetrimide-chlorhexidine, 70% ethanol, povidone-iodine and silver nitrate, a total period of exposure of endospores to the biocide, for seven minutes, produced metabolic inactivation of the endospores.

The unique structure of the human eye as well as exposure of the eye directly to the environment renders it vulnerable to a number of uncommon infectious diseases caused by fungi and parasites. Host defenses directed against these microorganisms, once anatomical barriers are breached, are often insufficient to prevent loss of vision. Therefore, the timely identification and treatment of the involved microorganisms are paramount. The anatomy of the eye and its surrounding structures is presented with an emphasis upon the association of the anatomy with specific infection of fungi and parasites.

For example, filamentous fungal infections of the eye are usually due to penetrating trauma by objects contaminated by vegetable matter of the cornea or globe or, by extension, of infection from adjacent paranasal sinuses. Fungal endophthalmitis and chorioretinitis, on the other hand, are usually the result of antecedent fungemia seeding the ocular tissue. Candida spp. are the most common cause of endogenous endophthalmitis, although initial infection with the dimorphic fungi may lead to infection and scarring of the chorioretina. Purpose of review: Significant advances in knowledge on rhinosporidiosis and Rhinosporidium seeberi were made in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2004. These advances are reviewed on account of the continuing sporadic occurrence of the disease universally, and because of the availability of new approaches that could resolve persisting enigmas of both the disease and its causative pathogen.

Recent findings: R. seeberi, the pathogen that causes rhinosporidiosis, has been definitively classified using molecular biological tools in a new clade – the Mesomycetozoea, along with 10 parasitic and saprobic microbes. The controversial spherical bodies of the endospores have been shown to comprise both lipid/protein nutritive bodies and other spherical bodies that are metabolizing units that reduce MTT (3-[4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl]-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide). This indicates the viability of these spherical bodies, provisionally identified as the electron dense bodies that have also been shown to contain nucleic acids.

MTT reduction as an indicator of viability has been used to determine the sensitivity of rhinosporidial endospores to biocides, antimicrobial drugs, and to specific antibodies. Genetic heterogeneity has been identified in strains from humans and animals. Cell-mediated and humoral immune responses have been demonstrated in human patients and in mice. Several mechanisms of immune evasion by R. seeberi have been identified.

Summary: These findings are applicable in both clinical and laboratory practice, while the basic advances have implications in further work on experimental pathogenicity, the biology of R. seeberi, and on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of rhinosporidiosis.

Revista Iberoamericana de Micologia 22(4): 213-216 In the past five years, with the use of molecular strategies the phylogenetic affinities of the two more resilient pathogens studied in medical mycology, Lacazia loboi and Rhinosporidium seeberi were finally deciphered.

These studies found that L. loboi was the sister taxon to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, and R. seeberi was closely related to protistan spherical aquatic fish pathogens, located at the point were animals diverged from the fungi, in the class Mesomycetozoea. These initial studies indicated that a molecular strategy was the ideal approach to further understand these anomalous pathogens.

However, the limited amount of information gathered so far from few DNA sequences, although crucial to place these organisms in the tree of life and to take a glance to their ecological preferences, did not provide answers to other important traits.

PRELIMINARY REMARK: In June 1985 the Subcommittee on the taxonomic of Phototrophic Bacteria proposed that names of cyanobacteria described and validly published as blue-green algae under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature are recognized as having been published under the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision) [1].

In September 1986, the Judicial Commission agreed unanimously to recommend the following to the ICSB (now ICSP): those names of taxa of Cyanobacteria and Cyanophyta that are valid under the Botanical Code be considered valid under the Bacteriological Code for the purpose of preparing an acceptance list comparable to the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names [2].

However, “Declarations of intent” by the Judicial Commission were not taken up by the ICSB (now ICSP). ?In 2003, the “Subcommitteee on the taxonomy of phototrophic bacteria” [3] proposed the preparation of a list of approved names of cyanobateria under the Bacteriological Code and a small committee was appointed to prepare such a list.

However, such a list is not yet available. Consequently, names of cyanobacteria described and validly published as blue-green algae under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature have no standing in bacterial nomenclature, unless they are again described under the Rules of the Bacteriological Code (1990 revision).

All DNA–DNA reassociation values between two strains of M. aeruginosa and the other four species exceeded 70%, which is considered high enough for them to be classified within the same bacterial species. It is proposed to unify these five species into M. aeruginosa under the Rules of the Bacteriological Code and NIES843(T) (=IAM M-247(T)) is proposed as the type strain.

Two other species, Microcystis flos-aquae and Microcystis pseudofilamentosa, should be regarded as morphological variations of this unified M. aeruginosa. The current taxonomy of cyanobacteria depends too much upon morphological characteristics and must be reviewed by means of bacteriological methods as well as traditional botanical methods.

The authors of the sections on the cyanobacteria in Bergey’s Manual admit that the proposed classification is a temporary one that will undoubtedly require modification in the future. They state that many generic names used in the past (e.g. Synechococcus, Leptolyngbya, Pseudanabaena) will eventually have to be split into several new genera (Castenholz, 2001).

This is especially true if molecular phylogenetic analyses based on sequence comparison of 16S rRNA and other relevant genes are used as the basis of taxonomy and nomenclature. There is a strong view that biopharmaceutin leads are more likely to be detected in cell function assays than in in vitro assays (210). In this context, construction of surrogate host cells for in vivo drug screening is an interesting development.

For example, the ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to express heterologous proteins makes it an attractive option; its use in screens based on substitution assays, differential expression assays, and transactivation assays is proving to be an effective route to drug discovery. The procedures involved and the future for S. cerevisiae as a tool for targeted screening have been discussed recently by Munder and Hinnen (334).

The etiological agent of rhinosporidiosis, Rhinosporidium seeberi, was first described by Malbran in 1892. Since this first observation, over a century has passed and the taxonomy of this enigmatic organism remains controversial. Previous investigators  have provisionally classified R. seeberi as a protist, phycomycete, and an ascomy-cetous fungus.

These historical attempts to establish the taxonomic position of R.
seeberi have been solely based on light and electron-microscopic observations of the pathogen within infected host tissues.

Intractability to culture, lack of an animal model of infection, and an unknown ecological niche have all contributed to the difficulties in classification of R. seeberi. Recently, several investigators have employed molecular phylogenetic analysis to reveal the taxonomic affinities of R. seeberi.

The first of these studies Herr et al. (1999), found that the sequence of the 18S SSU rDNA of R. seeberi from two Sri Lankan patients with rhinosporidiosis clustered with a recently discover-ed group of fish parasites. This study was later corroborated independently by Frede-ricks et al. (2000), whose 18S SSU rDNA sequence from a dog with rhinosporidiosis  proved to be identical to that of the human isolates sequenced by Herr et al.

Most  recently, the 18S SSU rDNA sequence of R. seeberi from a swan with conjunctival rhinosporidiosis was also found to be identical to those previously published.

These molecular data all placed R. seeberi within the DRIP clade (DRIP:

Dermocystidium, rosette agent, Ichthyophonus, and Psorospermium) Ragan et al. (1996). The DRIP clade, renamed as the class Ichthyosporea, by Cavalier-Smith (1998) and more recently as the class Mesomycetozoea by Mendoza et al. (2002) is comprised of organisms at the most basal branch of the animal-fungal divergence. R. seeberi has  several features in common with other mesomycetozoeans: (a) it was previously classified as a fungus or a different type of protozoan; (b) it is associated with aquatic environments; (c) it produces spherical structures containing several daughter cells (endospores); and (d) R. seeberi and some other mesomycetozoeans are intractable to culture. In spite of these similarities, R. seeberi differs from the other mesomyceto-zoeans in that it is the only member known to cause disease in mammals and birds.

The Dutch in relation to EU refererence laboratory EARSS Annual Report 2005 The European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS), funded by DG SANCO of the European Commission, is an international network of national surveillance systems which collects comparable and validated antimicrobial susceptibility data for public health action.

EARSS performs continuous surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility for seven major bacterial pathogens Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa causing invasive infections and monitors variations of antimicrobial resistance over time and place.

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus can cause a range of infections, syndromes, and toxicosis that vary in their severity, duration, and pathogenic mechanism. One common factor affecting the establishment and progression of staphylococcal disease is the production of the requisite cell-surface and extracellular proteins.

S. aureus can produce upward of 40 molecules that augment virulence. These factors are regulated in a specific manner. The bacteria use signal transduction systems to sense the environmental conditions they encounter during the course of the pathogenic process and a regulatory RNA along with various transcriptional activators and repressors to optimize the expression of many genes to enhance survival new milieus. I will provide an overview of the staphylococcal regulatory loci, discuss our work on the identification and characterization of new transcriptional regulators, and within the limits of what is known, provide a model for the regulatory circuit that governs the production of virulence factors in S. aureus.

School of Microbiology and Immunology, The University of New South Wales, Australia. BACKGROUND: Blooms of toxic cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) have become increasingly common in the surface waters of the world. Of the known toxins produced by cyanobacteria, the microcystins are the most significant threat to human and animal health. These cyclic peptides are potent inhibitors of eukaryotic protein phosphatases type 1 and 2A. Synthesized nonribosomally, the microcystins contain a number of unusual amino acid residues including the beta-amino polyketide moiety Adda (3-amino-9-methoxy-2,6, 8-trimethyl-10-phenyl-4,6-decadienoic acid).

We have characterized the microcystin biosynthetic gene cluster from Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806. RESULTS: A cluster spanning 55 kb, composed of 10 bidirectionally transcribed open reading frames arranged in two putative operons (mcyA-C and mcyD-J), has been correlated with microcystin formation by gene disruption and mutant analysis. Of the 48 sequential catalytic reactions involved in microcystin synthesis, 45 have been assigned to catalytic domains within six large multienzyme synthases/synthetases (McyA-E, G), which incorporate the precursors phenylacetate, malonyl-CoA, S-adenosyl-L-methionine, glutamate, serine, alanine, leucine, D-methyl-isoaspartate, and arginine.

The additional four monofunctional proteins are putatively involved in O-methylation (McyJ), epimerization (McyF), dehydration (McyI), and localization (McyH). The unusual polyketide amino acid Adda is formed by transamination of a polyketide precursor as enzyme-bound intermediate, and not released during the process. CONCLUSIONS: This report is the first complete description of the biosynthesis pathway of a complex cyanobacterial metabolite.

The enzymatic organization of the microcystin assembly represents an integrated polyketide-peptide biosynthetic pathway with a number of unusual structural and enzymatic features. These include the integrated synthesis of a beta-amino-pentaketide precursor and the formation of beta- and gamma-carboxyl-peptide bonds, respectively. Other features of this complex system also observed in diverse related biosynthetic clusters are integrated C- and N-methyltransferases, an integrated aminotransferase, and an associated O-methyltransferase and a racemase acting on acidic amino acids.

interesting about the copper sulphate....negative blood types have copper based blood, perhaps they are immune to morgellans? perhaps this is a biological weapon to wipe out the 85% of us they want dead? considering the 85% of us are primarily rh+, I would say this is likely not far off the mark.
