Syrian state television announces plans to broadcast live interview with former army officer, suspected of aiding assassination of Hezbollah official.
The Syrian state-run news agency SANA said on Thursday that it will be broadcasting a live interview on Saturday with a Syrian officer who defected from the army about his alleged collaboration with Israeli intelligence in the assassination of top Hezbollah official, Imad Mughniyah.
The Syrian officer is expected to discuss the ways in which the Israeli and Western intelligence agencies allegedly interfere in Syria’s internal affairs to cause civil strife.
According to reports, the officer was discovered in Turkey, and it is unclear whether he was captured by Turkish authorities or was kidnapped by Syrian intelligence.
SANA said that the spy will be speaking on camera in what the agency described as “confessions of an Israeli spy” about a plot against Syria.
Imad Mughniyah was killed when his car exploded in Damascus in 2008 and both Syria and Iran blame Israel for his assassination, despite Israel’s denial of any involvement.
Syrian Interior Minister Brig. Gen. Bassam Abdul-Majid called Mughniyah’s assassination at the time a “terrorist act”.
Syria has been gripped by pro-democracy protests calling for the ousting of President Bashar Assad since mid-March.
An estimated 2,600 people have been killed since protests began, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.
