Imprisonment without trial, wiretaps without warrants, video surveillance, efforts to control and restrict the Internet, torturing of detainees, monitoring of private emails, and the innovation of airport “body” scanners, are all part of the increasing consolidation of control. And it’s all under the guise of “security.”
In the name of fighting terrorism, The Patriot Act and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in the United States have ramped up the stakes. Obsessions with border security keep us focused on threats from the outside – so much so that we don’t see what we’re giving up.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was released on bail Thursday — confined to a supporter’s 600-acre estate but free to get back to work spilling U.S. government secrets on his website as he fights Sweden’s attempt to extradite him on allegations of rape and molestation.
The silver-haired Australian, who surrendered to British police Dec. 7, will have to observe a curfew, wear an electronic tag and report to police in person every day.
But there are no restrictions on his Internet use, even as U.S. authorities consider charges (VN: only "consider" charges??? But I thought there was a national security risk and the entire nation was going to go down because some diplomat said something bad about another diplomat?, LOL) related to thousands of leaked diplomatic cables and other secret documents WikiLeaks has released. Vatic Note: Looks like riots are continuing in Greece, here is an update of the latest one, which was much more of a battle, since the demonstrators learned from the last one to come better prepared to match the violence of the police, and they did. Well, if you watch the video all the way through you will see that things are not going so well in elite land. This demonstration along with the one in Italy is beginning to show the anger the people are experiencing and how very willing they are to stand no matter what and its turning very violent in response to the police brutality the people had suffered in previous demonstrations, this time they were ready to fight back. You can see the shift as each one gets worse on the part of the people and the cops were actually cowering through most of it since the people were using gas filled bottles and setting them on fire and throwing them into the middle of the police line up. I can’t help but get the feeling that there’s more to the whole WikiLeaks phenomenon than meets the eye. A lot more.
On the surface of it, this organization and its public face, Julian Assange, seem like the best things to come along since Daniel Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers. Like many people who believe in transparency, and that secrecy is the enemy of democracy, I want very much to believe in WikiLeaks.
But frankly, the whole thing is making me very uneasy. It all seems too good to be true, and you know what they say about things that can be described that way.
I love the fact that the fledgling organization (which seemed to spring from nowhere in 2007) has released literally hundreds of thousands of documents, videos, and diplomatic cables. This material has shone a light on a number of very bad things the American government and other governments around the world have done and are doing. And the rhetoric on their web site is right up my alley.
Take this excerpt from the “about” section of the WikiLeaks site:
“Consider Daniel Ellsberg, working within the US government during the Vietnam War. He comes into contact with the Pentagon Papers, a meticulously kept record of military and strategic planning throughout the war. At this juncture as they continue to flail away with old tools of fear, threats and illegal seizures, the herd on the ground has begun to fight back. We would suggest the cat’s out of the proverbial bag. The shaving crème is out of the can. Particularly in the USA, a new and nasty pushback has begun with a new internet army; and this is an army of revenge with many being armed to the teeth.

Let us ponder for a second about the meaning of ‘leaking’. When something is leaking, it is usually understood that some fluid substance that is supposed to be flowing in a certain direction, is escaping from its designed route because of a defect in the structure that was built to guide it. Usually, if you have a leaking pipe in your water system, your main problem is that you are unable to control the flow of it, and water goes into directions where you don’t want it to be going.
However, the definition of ‘Wikileaking’ seems to be following entirely different laws of nature. Indeed, the information is flowing away from the secret pipelines it was originally guided into. However, the strange thing about ‘Wikileaking’ is that Israel, a country widely known for its secret dealings and cunning intelligence service, is managing to keep dry feet in spite of the massive political flooding allegedly caused by Wikileaks’ founding father, Julian Assange.
The lack of control that is so typical of other forms of ‘leaking’, certainly does not seem to apply to ‘Wikileaking’ – instead it looks like it is under perfect control, and carefully guided in such a way that it only serves the interests of one state, namely that of Israel.

During remarks that she made for the 15th Anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the launch of a new program that according to Clinton will now become the centerpiece of U.S. foreign policy. This new program is known as the Global Health Initiative, and it is being incredibly well-funded at a time when the U.S. government is drowning in debt. According to Clinton, 63 billion dollars will be spent by the U.S. to prevent pregnancies and to improve "family planning" services around the globe over the next six years.
