America was built on the principles of equality and basic human rights for all. Recent mosque protests and congressional hearings on American Muslims are all unfortunate examples of a rising tide of fear that lead to intolerance and inequality. This climate of suspicion towards our fellow Americans compromises the great values that our country was founded upon. According to a 2007 Pew survey, American Muslims are as "mainstream" as other Americans, although there are problems in Europe.
ReplyDeleteIn response to a barrage of email messages encouraging hatred and fear of Muslims, I did a survey of my own almost a year ago. I compared the murder rates in dozens of countries to the percentages of Muslims in those countries. Then I did the reverse by using percentage of Muslims in populations as a base. I researched the issue from other angles as well. I found that there was zero, zip, zilch, nada correlation between Muslims and homicide.
