Vatic Note: I have to commend Northern Truthseeker.   I thought our sheep were bad, but Canada is just as bad if not worse.   He sticks it out and tells the truth with little hope of converting the ignorant, but then we have the same problem, but for some reason, our sheep are seriously starting to wake up. Given that we all know that ISIS is a product of Israel and her various national puppets, like the USA and Canada, then we can assume, this whole propoganda exercise is for purposes of manipulation and thus go from there. So read all this below

It should be a known fact to everyone by now that 'ISIS' is nothing more than a fraud and a scam....That ridiculous "terrorist group" is the creation of the US CIA and the Israeli Mossad for the sole purpose of undermining the Bashar al-Assad government in Syria... And now that fraud is being manipulated by both our criminal governments and the Jew (VN: Khazar owned) media to try to convince gullible people that a military assault on Syria is now necessary to have it "eliminated"...... Sadly, the majority of people still believe that ISIS is real and they indeed will support an assault on Syria that could see thousands of innocent lives extinguished....

But what I found just yesterday in the news shows that the US (and of course their masters in Israel) are upping the stakes in their insane push for a war against Syria.... For according to the following report from Brandon Turbeville, over at the Activist Post website, at www.activistpost.com, the lunatics in the US government are now claiming that Bashar al-Assad is supporting ISIS (!) US Claims Assad Supporting ISIS as US Supports ISIS

Reminiscent of a 1970’s television show, whenever one tunes in to the mainstream corporate news to observe the latest propaganda from the US government and the State Department in particular, the viewer can scarcely contain himself from asking “What will they think of next?”

Indeed, mainstream news and the US State Department must be attempting to top themselves in a contest that could only be titled “Wackiest theory of the week.”

Enter this week’s contestant: the “Assad is supporting ISIS” claim.

Yesterday, the U.S. Embassy Syria Twitter account sent out a tweet suggesting that the Syrian government was undertaking a bombing campaign in support of ISIS and the terrorist organization’s creeping assault on Aleppo.

The problem with this propaganda line is that not only is it untrue, it is incredibly stupid. By stupid, I do not mean ordinary levels of stupidity but an epic level of stupidity that would, under normal circumstances, suggest the possibility of brain damage.

Of course, those who sent the tweet are not stupid at all. In fact, they know full well that Assad is not supporting ISIS. They are merely attempting to shift focus after it was revealed a week ago that the United States, NATO, and the GCC not only were aware of ISIS/AQI early on, but that they were actively supporting their advance by documents belonging to the Defense Intelligence Agency.

With that little piece of information circulating throughout the airwaves (at least the alternative ones), the US is now claiming that it is Assad who is supporting ISIS. If this little piece of propaganda is able to stick, the justification for direct military assault on Syria will be more easily sold to the general public in the West who, at best, are only half listening to any report at any given time. (VN: and believing nothing of what they hear from any western gov and only half of what they see.)

Obviously, Assad is not supporting ISIS and any delineation between ISIS, AQI, FSA, “moderate rebels,” Harakat Hazm, al-Nusra Front or any others fighters opposing Bashar al-Assad in Syria is disingenuous to say the least. Assad is and has always been – along with Iran and Hezbollah (and Iraq free of American dictates) – the true opponent of ISIS and al-Qaeda in Syria. Quite frankly, all claims to the contrary are nothing more than war propaganda.

NTS Notes: When I read this report that the US government is stating that Bashar al-Assad was supporting ISIS, I did not know whether to laugh or to cry.... Laugh at the ridiculousness and ludicrous insanity of the American government for making such a laughable claim.... Or cry for the fact that many gullible and stupid Americans will actually believe this garbage to be true!

The truth here is simple... The US and Israeli governments are desperate for any excuse possible to get Syria destroyed, and after failing with other lies, they are now trying this one to see if the people are gullible enough to believe it..... Yes, they actually believe people are this stupid!

Vatic Note: Well, it appears corruption at all corporate levels are being allowed to run rampid, until now. This below is good news, we hope. What appears to be happening is the average "SHEEP" are beginning to wake up, at every level of our society, and that is a good thing.

Now this was going on during the reign of Jeb Bush.... as governor.   So how come he didn't do anything about all this when he was in office?   This is evidently not new, since Billions were involved and that takes time to scam down that much money.

I have to say, I am "cautiously encouraged" by this exposure of corruption at this high a level and with the corrections being made to bring the system back into service to the people,. who both serve the system and who receive benefits from it.

Now, the question is, "How many more are there out there, at other states, doing this same scam at the same financial cost to the taxpayer"?   It does not make it clear in this article if this federal probe is going on in all states, or just targeted states that complaints had been filed about?   I would love to know that, since I am sure, there is some of this to some degree, probably going on everywhere.

Remember the whole point of "COMMUNISM" is for Government to control every aspect of life, and then CORPORATIONS, to control government, thereby ushering in a FASCIST NEW WORLD ORDER, and if its also Satanic, that means it would be celebrated and not prosecuted. Florida Skilled Nursing Facility Agrees to Pay Record Settlement of $17 Million to Resolve False Claims Act Allegations

Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, George L. Piro, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Miami Field Office, and Shimon R. Richmond, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), announced that Hebrew Homes Health Network, Inc., its operating subsidiaries and affiliates, and William Zubkoff, the former president and executive director of Hebrew Homes Health Network, Inc. (collectively Hebrew Homes), have agreed to pay $17 million to resolve allegations that Hebrew Homes violated the False Claims Act by improperly paying doctors for referrals of Medicare patients requiring skilled nursing care.

Hebrew Homes provided skilled nursing services at seven rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities in Miami-Dade County, Florida. This is the largest settlement of alleged violations of the Anti-Kickback Statute paid by skilled nursing facilities in the United States.

“The record settlement announced today demonstrates this Office’s commitment to rooting out all forms of illegal kickback schemes,” said U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer of the Southern District of Florida. “And that is certainly true in the context of nursing homes, where the Department of Justice will not allow healthcare decisions for elderly Medicare patients to be influenced by kickback payments to physicians. The integrity of our public health care program requires that such decisions be based on quality of care.”

From 2006 through 2013, Hebrew Homes allegedly operated a sophisticated kickback scheme, in which they hired numerous physicians ostensibly as medical directors pursuant to contracts that specified numerous job duties and hourly requirements. The various facilities had several such medical directors under contract at any given time, paying each several thousand dollars monthly. The United States alleged that in reality these were ghost positions, and that most of the medical directors were required to perform few, if any, of their contracted job duties. Instead, they were allegedly paid for their patient referrals to the Hebrew Homes facilities, which increased exponentially once the medical directors were put on the payroll.

“Illegal inducements paid to physicians in exchange for patient referrals will not be tolerated,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “Medicare funds should be used to provide care for our senior citizens, not as an inducement to physicians to refer business.”

“Hebrew Homes’ intricate kickback scheme in this record-setting case threatened the impartiality of physician referrals, the financial integrity of Medicare, and the public’s trust in the health care system,” said Special Agent in Charge Shimon R. Richmond of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG). “Our agency will continue to investigate nursing homes and other health care providers that seek to illegally boost profits at the expense of federal health care programs.”

The Anti-Kickback Statute is intended to ensure that a physician’s medical judgment is not compromised by improper financial incentives. The Anti-Kickback Statute prohibits offering, paying, soliciting or receiving remuneration to induce referrals of items or services covered by federal health care programs, including Medicare.

“Illegal kickbacks undermine the integrity of the Medicare system by putting profits in front of patient welfare,” said Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro of the FBI Miami Field Office. “The investigators who helped unravel this intricate scam are to be commended for their diligence and commitment to root out fraud within our health care system.”

As part of the settlement, Mr. Zubkoff has agreed to resign as Hebrew Homes’ Executive Director and to no longer be an employee of the company. Also, as part of the settlement announced today, Hebrew Homes has entered into a five-year Corporate Integrity Agreement with HHS-OIG, and has agreed to change its policies on hiring and maintaining medical directors.

The settlement announced today resolves allegations made in a lawsuit filed by Stephen Beaujon, a former CFO of Hebrew Homes, under the qui tam, or whistleblower, provisions of the False Claims Act, which permit private individuals to sue on behalf of the government for false claims and to share in any recovery. Mr. Beaujon will receive $4,250,000.

This settlement illustrates the government’s emphasis on combating health care fraud and marks another achievement for the Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) initiative, which was announced in May 2009 by the Attorney General and the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The partnership between the two departments has focused efforts to reduce and prevent Medicare and Medicaid financial fraud through enhanced cooperation. One of the most powerful tools in this effort is the False Claims Act. Since January 2009, the Justice Department has recovered a total of more than $24.3 billion through False Claims Act cases, with more than $15.3 billion of that amount recovered in cases involving fraud against federal health care programs.

The settlement was the result of a coordinated effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida and the Civil Division’s Commercial Litigation Branch. Mr. Ferrer commended the joint investigation team, which included special agents with the FBI and HHS-OIG, for their diligent work on this matter.

The case was investigated and the settlement negotiated by Assistant U.S. Attorney Franklin Monsour and Department of Justice Trial Attorneys Elizabeth Young and Adam Schwartz.

The case is captioned United States ex rel. Beaujon v. Hebrew Homes Health Network, Inc., et al., Case No. 12-20951 CIV (S.D. Fla.). The claims resolved by the settlement are allegations only and there has been no determination of liability.

I am learning how to use it, so its been a time consuming effort on our part. May 14, 1948- Official Recognition- The United States of America becomes the first country to officially recognize Israel as an independent nation.

1949-1973- US-Israel Aid Commences- The United States gives Israel an average of $122 million per year in foreign aid payments.

Summer 1954- Lavon Affair- Israel recruits Egyptian Jews to blow up American and British targets in Egypt. Israel planned on blaming the murderous false-flag attacks on the Muslim Brotherhood in an effort to garner support from the US and Britain. After officially denying any involvement, the Israeli government finally admitted their role in the incident in 2005 by honoring the surviving agents with a certificate of appreciation.

1955-1970- Israel Steals American Uranium to Build It’s First Nuclear Weapons- In 2011, the Institute for Research on Middle Eastern Policy examined hundreds of newly de-classified documents from the FBI and CIA and discovered that Israeli spies in collaboration with American Jews stole hundreds of kilograms of weapons grade uranium from US stockpiles and shipped it to Israel. Although Israel does not officially acknowledge the possession of nuclear weapons, their nuclear arsenal is estimated at between 200-300 nuclear weapons. (Source: PressTV)

1963- AIPAC Formed- The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) “America’s Pro-Israel” is formed, but refuses to comply with US law and register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. AIPAC has been in violation of federal law for nearly 50 years, but through political contributions and connections, AIPAC officials have remained above prosecution for their many violations of Federal law, including espionage (as addressed later). June 8, 1967- USS Liberty- Israeli jets and torpedo boats attack the American naval ship USS Liberty with the intention of murdering every sailor on board and then blaming the attack on Egypt. Israel’s goal was to draw America into the Israeli-Arab War. Israel has officially claimed the attack was an “accident,” but every survivor of the USS Liberty claimed that it could not possibly have been an accident given that Israeli jets flew directly over the ship hours earlier on several occasions and one pilot flew so close that he waved to the US sailors, and the sailors waved back.

Given the proximity of the jets and the surrounding facts of the incident, there is no question that Israel knew whose ship it was. Lt. General Marshall Carter, the director of the NSA, told congress the attack, “couldn’t be anything else but deliberate.” A later coverup ensued, and in 2002, Captain Ward JAGC senior counsel for the court of inquiry claimed that the court of inquiry’s findings were intended to coverup what was a deliberate attack by Israel on a ship it knew to be American.

1975- Oil Guarantee- The Jewish US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, secretly brokered a deal in which the United States of America guaranteed Israel’s oil supply in the event of a crisis. The 1975 Israel-United States Memorandum of Understanding (see the full text here) required the United States to maintain an oil reserve for Israel and guarantee the shipping of that oil to Israel in times of emergency. This deal has cost the United States more than a hundred billion dollars since it was first enacted. The most troubling aspect of this deal was not the cost however, but the stipulation that in case of an oil emergency in which both the US and Israel needed oil, the US would give its oil to Israel. Section 3 (b):

"If the oil Israel needs to meet all of its normal requirements for domestic consumption is unavailable for purchase in circumstances where’ quantitative restrictions through embargo or otherwise also prevent the United States from procuring oil to meet its normal requirements, the United States Government will promptly make oil available for purchase by Israel in accordance with the International Energy Agency conservation and allocation formula as applied by the United States Government, in order to meet Israel’s essential requirements. If Israel is unable to secure the necessary means to transport such oil to Israel, the United States Government will make every effort to help Israel secure the necessary means of transport."

This is oil that would have been used to heat homes during the winter, power ambulances, and provide the fuel for tractors to farm America’s agricultural lands. To put this into perspective, in the event of an oil crisis, the fuel that Americans would need to heat their homes, get them to work, and produce food would go to Israel. This agreement very well could have starved tens of thousands of Americans in order to save Israelis if an oil crisis would have taken place.

1978- US Starts Paying Egypt $1.3 Billion Annually In Exchange For Maintaining Good Relations With Israel- John McCain admitted in a CNN interview that US-Egyptian aid was essentially a bribe to maintain good relations with Israel. The aid was pledged during a US-brokered peace negotiation between Egypt and Israel, and began to be distributed just after the signing of the Egypt-Israel peace accord.

1980-1981- Israel Teams Up With Republicans to Defeat Jimmy Carter- During the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1981, Israel, upset at President Jimmy Carter’s attempt to create a peaceful two-state solution in Palestine, used its clandestine operations in Iran to prevent American hostages from being released before Carter’s re-election bid. Carter wrote in his White House Diaries that Israel was purposefully thwarting the peace process with Palestine so it could continue to settle on Palestinian land.

History has certainly proven Carter right, and Peter Beinart, the author of The Crisis of Zionism confirms this fact by investigating every major Israeli-Palestinain peace negotiation, and pointing out Israel’s efforts to subvert them. According to Consortium News, Israel used its operatives in Iran to ensure that US hostages were not released before the election, which doomed Carter’s chances for re-election. The hostages were released immediately after Reagan’s inauguration, and Israel was subsequently caught shipping US weapons to Iran after an Israeli chartered plane crashed in the Soviet Union.

Israel claimed to have the Reagan administration’s approval for the transfer. As the Consortium article points out, recent discoveries make the cooperation between the Israelis and Republicans to remove a US President by using American hostages as political pawns, impossible to ignore.

1980-1990- Israel Steals American Technology and Equipment at Unprecedented Levels- According to the Israeli newspaper Hareetz, “It is worth mentioning that in the 1980s, regardless of Jonathan Pollards’ espionage activities for Israel, Israeli companies and individuals were involved many cases of technological espionage, steeling U.S. secrets, technology and equipment. The most outstanding case involved Milco, a U.S. based company owned by Israeli tycoon Arnon Milchan, which bought and shipped equipment with which could have also been used as triggers for nuclear weapons.” Recently released FBI documents revealed that current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was integrally involved in the Milco incident.

1982- Sabra and Shatila Massacres- The Israeli military purposefully allowed a right-wing Lebanese militia to enter two Palestinian refugee camps, which were under Israel’s control, and rape, murder, and dismember 800 civilians. Nearly all of the dead were women, children, and elderly men. In 1983, an Israeli investigation concluded that then Defense Minister Ariel Sharon bore “personal responsibility” for failing to prevent the massacre.

The New York Times recently uncovered de-classified transcripts of conversations between US officials and Israeli officials, in which Israeli officials misled the Americans about the events in Beirut, and bullied them into accepting outrageous accusations that the Palestinian women and children were “terrorists,” and therefore deserved to be massacred. According to the New York Times, “The Sabra and Shatila massacres severely undercut America’s influence in the Middle East, and its moral authority plummeted.” Only a year later, in 1983, the US marine barracks were bombed in Lebanon, in which 241 marines were killed.

1985- Jonathan Pollard Incident- A Jewish American named Jonathan Pollard was caught stealing American secrets and selling them to Israel. At first, Israel denied any involvement in the incident, but later admitted complicity in in 1998. The wife of Pollard’s handler, Avi Sella, worked for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and Pollard later admitted that a prominent ADL member was deeply involved in the spying. According to the Air Force’s website, the Tethered Aerostat Radar System, or TARS, is an aerostat-borne, surveillance program. Using the aerostat as a stationary airborne platform for a surveillance radar, the system is capable of detecting low altitude aircraft at the radar’s maximum range by mitigating curvature of the earth and terrain masking limitations. TARS provides a detection and monitoring capability along the United States-Mexico border, the Florida Straits, and a portion of the Caribbean in support of the Department of Defense Counterdrug Program.

The primary agencies using the TARS surveillance data include U.S. Northern Command in support of Customs and Border Protection (Air and Marine Operations Center and Caribbean Air and Marine Operations Center) and U.S. Southern Command in support of Joint Interagency Task Force-South. In addition to its counterdrug mission, TARS surveillance data also supports North American Aerospace Defense Command‘s air sovereignty mission for the continental United States.

Tuesday, 15 January 2013, we received a government request for a proposal (RfP) to de-scope and close the TARS program by the end of the fiscal year. The government indicated that it does not intend to exercise the final two option years for the TARS contract.

In the RfP, the government also indicated its intent that aerostat flight operations will cease on March 15, 2013, and that the remainder of the fiscal year will be used to deflate aerostats, disposition equipment, and prepare sites for permanent closure.

We are currently reviewing all the details of the RfP and evaluating the possible impacts on the program and our workforce. We continue to communicate with the government on this matter, and we will have more information in the coming days and weeks.

A new genetic study suggests a lineage of Egyptian pharaohs were subjected to willful genetic manipulation by a technologically advanced civilization.

Some would call this definitive proof that the builders of the pyramids had a strong connection with beings that originated elsewhere in the universe.

Stuart Fleischmann, Assistant Professor of Comparative Genomics at the Swiss University in Cairo and his team have recently published the results of a 7-year study that mapped the genomes of 9 ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. If proven correct, their findings could potentially change the world’s history books.

Fleischmann and his team subjected the precious samples of ancient DNA to a process called Polymerse Chain Reaction (PCR). In the field of molecular biology this technique is often used to replicate and amplify a single copy of a piece of DNA, giving researchers a clear picture of someone’s genetic fingerprint.

Eight out of nine samples returned interesting but typical results. The ninth sample belonged to Akhenaten, the enigmatic 14th century BC pharaoh and father of Tutankhamun.

A small fragment of desiccated brain tissue had been the source of the DNA sample and the test was repeated using bone tissue but the same results were obtained.

One of the culprits was a gene called CXPAC-5, which is responsible for cortex growth. The anomaly is visible in the image below.

It appears this increased activity in Akhenaten’s genome would suggest he had a higher cranial capacity because of the need to house a larger cortex. But what mutation would have caused a human brain to grow? We have yet to discover such a technique despite years of breakthroughs in genetics.

Could this 3,300 year-old evidence point out to ancient genetic manipulation? Was it the work of advanced extraterrestrial beings.

Is the mythology of ancient Egypt more than a collection of allegoric tales? Prof. Fleischmann explains:

"Telomerase [a genetic enzyme] is only expended by two processes: extreme aging and extreme mutation. Genetic and archaeological data suggests Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten lived to about 45 years of age. That is not nearly enough to consume all the chromosomal telomerase, leaving behind one inconvenient but possible explanation.

"This hypothesis is also backed up by the fact that electron microscope analysis revealed signs of nucleotidic cicatrix, which is a telltale sign of the DNA helix healing after being exposed to strong mutagens."

Does this suggest that Akhenaten, one of ancient Egypt’s most mysterious pharaohs, was subjected to genetic modification during his life? If anything, this allegation supports the theory that ancient aliens once visited the civilization that lived along the banks of the Nile.

Another interesting piece of evidence provides backing to this hypothesis. The image below shows two microscope photographs of osseous tissue sampled from the skull of Akhenaten and that of a different mummy of the same age.

The bone tissue on the left is far denser and fundamentally different at a nanoscopic scale. Could this increase in strength of the skull bones be an indicator of increased brain development?

"This is an exciting finding, to say the least,” Fleischmann told press. “My team and I have submitted the papers for peer review and we’ve done and redone the tests enough times that we’re confident they’re accurate.

"I don’t know the full implication of our findings but I certainly believe they should at least point the scientific community in a direction that would have been immediately dismissed just a few decades ago."

If this study is correct, it will trigger an unprecedented paradigm shift. If aliens were actively involved in the life of the most powerful individuals thousands of years ago, does that mean they’ll return? Perhaps they never left at all.

But the most important aspect would be the existence of individuals, direct descendants of ancient Egypt’s royal lineage, that still posses the alien genes implanted in their ancestors’ genomes.

Miami Beach rabbi charged with molesting 11-year-old girl

Steve Karro denies wrongdoing, tells police touching was for ‘cleansing’ purposes because child exhibited ‘negative energy’

A rabbi from Miami Beach, Florida, was arrested and charged Thursday with molesting an 11-year-old girl at his art gallery last month.

Police said Rabbi Steve Karro, 55, placed the child on his lap last month and kissed her on the neck, then touched her bottom. Karro admitted to police during questioning that he inappropriately touched the child for “cleansing” purposes because she exhibited “negative energy,” the Miami Herald reported Thursday.

After questioning by police, Karro proclaimed his innocence. “There was nothing inappropriate, nothing that violated anybody’s right,” he said, according to CBSMiami.com.

A substitute rabbi at Miami Beach’s Shaare Ezra Sephardic Synagogue Congregation, Karro was charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12, and lewd and lascivious conduct on a child under 16.

Karro told CBS: “It was not touch, it was hug and the way I hug everybody, the way I hug all the kids, the way I caress them, the way I give everybody love. It was the same like everybody else.” Asked if there was kissing, he added: “There was plenty of time kissing, hugging, yes.”

He also gave the girl a bag of candy and told her not to tell her mother about the incident.

Police had no indication of any suspicious behaviour by Karro while he was officiating as rabbi.

“It’s something very simple — love, harmony, cleansing, nothing else,” Karro said after leaving jail on bond Thursday night. He went on to tell reporters that the candy he gave to the victim was intended to be a surprise birthday present for her mother.

Several people who know the rabbi supported him, CBS reported. Rosa Haimov said, “I’ve known Rabbi Karro for many years, and I do not believe he could do something like this. He only does good things to people, only helps people.”

Karro’s only previous brush with the law, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records, was for domestic violence in 1999, the Herald reported. His female partner was also arrested during that encounter, in what was described then as a “knock-down, drag-out fight.”

Miami Beach police on Thursday couldn’t explain the nature of the relationship between Karro and the 11-year-old girl, and said the child’s parents were informed of the allegations after she returned home the day she was alleged to have been fondled.

Ben, I’m doing this article for you as I promised, and I hope it will help you (and others) to make those decisions in the critical moments and days following an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) event. Although I had plenty of science courses in college, I am not a scientist. Certainly someone with a scientific background will comment on this article.

Let me state this: Scientists, I welcome all comments, positive or negative, but please make them proactive. These articles are forums where the writers are “emcees” that introduce topics for discussion and present some salient points. You guys and gals are the ones who pick up the topics and run the football in for the TD.

We need to be “SME’s” as we called them in the Army: Subject Matter Experts.

One of my personal goals for SHTF is not just to draw a large readership base; it is to help readers develop themselves and also develop one another. Let the site become an ORP (objective rally point) where everyone can plan, exchange ideas, and attain better levels of awareness and preparation for the times to come.

In this light, there is a lot of knowledge out there awaiting use. Take the knowledge you amass, step up to the plate, and take the swing: do the best you can with what you have. And if it isn’t perfect, so what? You give it your best shot and then adjust fire from there.

So here it is. Scenario 1 finds you on your way to work. You just dropped the kids off to school and you’re out on the freeway heading toward work at 8:05 am, armed with a cup of coffee and your local radio station. All of a sudden the radio crackles and all of the power in your vehicle cuts off and you drift (hopefully safely!) to a halt. You do a head check: all of your fellow commuters on the road are experiencing the same problem, except one guy in a ’54 Ford pickup truck who passes right by you.

You look at your wristwatch and it is blank. Your cell phone is off, and out. You notice a traffic light ahead of you is out, and the convenience store and its sign on the corner are devoid of lights. Somewhere in the heart of the American Midwest, about 200 miles above the ground, an ICBM just went off and delivered an EMP to the U.S.

This article and the series are going to focus on some basic things we can do to help us prepare beforehand for such a scenario. Almost all of the readers here knows about what an EMP is and some basics about it. We are not going to delve into all of the properties of the EMP. For those who haven’t heard of it, an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a high-density electrical field that can damage or destroy electronic devices. EMP can affect cars and trucks, computers, electrical appliances, aircraft, power transmission grids, and anything unshielded from it. This can be delivered by a missile or a satellite and would have devastating effects on the U.S. power grid and infrastructure, as mentioned in this citation:

Report of the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack, CRITICAL NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURES, April 2008: Page 45:

“It is not practical to try to protect the entire electrical power system or even all high value components from damage by an EMP event. There are too many components of too many different types, manufactures, ages, and designs. The cost and time would be prohibitive. Widespread collapse of the electrical power system in the area affected by EMP is virtually inevitable after a broad geographic EMP attack …”

Readers, I think you grasp the concept. Now let’s discuss what we can do about it. The first thing I propose to you:

“Low tech” your supplies as much as possible as your “base.”
Rely on your basics that do not rely upon electricity or technology. I have mentioned some items in previous articles that we’re going to stress here, as it is all interrelated. This list is neither in order nor exhaustive:

Lensatic Compass: good old-fashioned GI equipment; durable, reliable, and affordable. If you must carry your wrist compass (electronic), make sure your Lensatic is available for backup, and make sure you know how to use it.
Hand-crank flashlight: has its own little generator and doesn’t rely on batteries
A Good Automatic Movement Watch: You need to keep time and coordinate things with your family after the event. You’ll have to really shop and find one with a good warranty.
Slide Rule: Yes, you may find the need to make complex calculations in a hurry. The “Uncle Caveman” abacus just won’t do the trick on some things. Pick up a slide rule and go online or find references on how to use it.
Optics not requiring batteries: Those rangefinders and Steiners just lost their tech, and that wonderful laser crosshair reticle with range-tab vanished. Any scope for a weapon needs to not be dependent on any batteries, electronic optics, or laser devices.
Security devices: In this case, locks, safes (guns, valuables, etc), automobiles (touch pad entry), and anything requiring electricity or electronics to enter…make ‘em manual. What good is a gun safe that works electronically and then you have to blow the door to retrieve the weapons?
Vehicles: How high-tech is your vehicle? The ’54 Ford truck in the example will probably still be good to go; however, the Lamborghini may have just become a lawn ornament in memoriam. We’ll cover more on this later.
Well Water: The water pump isn’t going to work unless you have a genny, and even then it may not. What do you do? I ordered a kit from a guy name John Tatman: the EZ Water Well Hand Pump that has a special valve he supplies you and you build the pump out of PVC. The guy is great; he lets you talk to him directly on his cell phone if you have a problem. The kit works to wells up to 175 feet deep, at 4-5 gallons per minute; you can order it online. The whole kit and kaboodle will run you less than $250.
Food: Yes, food. How are you going to save what is in the fridge? Prepare by having adequate supplies of charcoal and a couple of grills (I recommend a Brinkman). Also, now is the time for canning supplies. Pick up a green two-burner Coleman camp stove that works on dual fuel (Coleman/white gas, and gasoline). You can use this to fire up the pressure canners and water-bath canners at a controlled rate. [Note: If you want to read about a “mad scramble” with food, go to Tess Pennington’s Ready Nutrition site and find my articles on how my wife and I made it through Hurricane Katrina] I strongly recommend visiting your local County Extension Office or the local Community College for a Canning Course.

An Additional note on food: Keeping in the fridge only what is necessary for about a week and putting the lion’s share into canned food, dry goods, or long shelf-life (dehydrated, mylar packed) foods is probably your best bet to safeguard your food supply in the long haul. Make sure to FIFO (first in, first out) your stock to keep the freshest/most recent purchases in storage.

The Bathroom: Yes, #1 and #2, always there! I highly recommend (if you don’t already compost) at the bare minimum a portable potty of the type that many seniors and those with health issues utilize. There are 4-gallon bags available in a roll in Wal-Mart for the bucket liner that are about $3.50 and have 75 bags to a roll. They last about a week. When all is said and done, you can do a controlled burn of them and save your water supplies/space in your septic tank.

We have covered a short list of what you need for low-tech equipment starters. But what about what you already have? How do you protect your gadgets and gizmos from the EMP? In the reference section at the end of this article, I have cited some works that will give you more EMP information and a site that you can research to find more information on Faraday Cages, which most of you guys and gals have heard about already. But just in case:

What is the Faraday Cage? It is a device enabling objects stored within its confines to be shielded from EMP and other types of charges. The scientist Michael Faraday expostulated its theorems back in 1836.

Copper and aluminum are the two best metals (in order) to use for your cage structures; however, steel will work. The main point is you must have a little background knowledge of what is needed. Maxwell’s equations relevant to a conductor are relevant here. The efflux (the waves: radio, gamma, etc) originating with an EMP is a broad-banded grouping.

Regarding Maxwell’s equation: Any resident excess charge whether fixed or time-varying must reside on the conductor’s effective surface; an excess disturbance would flow around a continuous conductor’s surface from one end to the other. The interior of such a conductor would not experience this flux.

The equation shows that a solid object that can be closed off (such as an ammo can or a metal trash can with tight fitting lid) without gaps can be effectively employed for a Faraday cage. This also illustrates how a grounding rod would not be needed if the gaps are closed off correctly (or if you are going to enmesh a whole room/structure and the wavelengths are not smaller than the apertures).

As I mentioned previously, I’m not a scientist; however, the information is out there and there is no need to “reinvent the wheel.”

There is a rule that I use for myself. You will have to gauge your budget and availability of equipment to see if you can apply it for your situation. Here it is:

Rule: Any electronic equipment should be bought in pairs/two (2) of each, with one out for use and a second in a Faraday Cage.

This may seem a “no brainer,” however, this insures that if you lose something? You may only lose one and have a backup for later. In addition, if there’s time to forsee it coming, you may be able to take that operational piece and stick that in a cage prior to it hitting the fan.

Here are a list of indispensibles and important items, non-exhaustive, for the cages:

Radiological Survey Meter, a.k.a. Geiger counter
Night vision devices
Scopes/red-dot sights/laser sights/electronic optics/range finders
Laptop computer (worth its weight in gold post-event)
Motorolas and hand-held communication devices
Batteries and chargers (solar and/or plug in’s)
Battery-powered IR/movement sensors
Calculators/wristwatches/battery testers…small electronic aids
***ANY medical device to maintain or sustain life (diabetes testers, hearing aids, etc)

Win the game with your backups. Stick them in cages and forget about them until you need them. We’re going to cover cages and other protective measures in Part 2. This will get you started, especially regarding your planning. Assess your stance and what is in place right now. What do you and your family require in terms of specialty gear?
